Short story:
The well had stood their long since the town was founded, unassuming and largely unused by the town’s folk in recent years. It proved the perfect spot to hide the thief’s ill-gotten gains. A simple tunnel dug at its base that expanded into a small cavern large enough for a man to crouch through; to think such treasures could lie in such a shabby, dank hollow. The jewels of a long-overthrown monarchs crown taken from a museum, chests brimming with coin swindled from a caravan on its way to the bank, and the rare, finely aged wines lifted from the cellar of a rich merchant.
During the dry seasons, the den could be accessed with the rope that would lift buckets of fresh water in years prior, lifting the chests proved difficult but entirely worth it because the well came with its own unique lock. During the rainy seasons, the well would fill and while the loot may be dampened and dirtied, it would also become inaccessible to any but the bravest and strongest swimmers. Indeed, the thieves fancied themselves truly cunning for such a simple yet ingenious safe to keep their loot, that is until one of them talked.
Even the most intricate of puzzles or most impenetrable of keeps can be waylaid by an overzealous drinker with a big mouth. When partaking in their collection of rare wines one of the thieves bragged loudly to any who would listen about the sunken treasure in their towns well and while in his stupor he had forgotten his ramblings, those that listened had not. Come the dry season and thieves found the now drained well empty not only of water, but of their stolen valuables too.
